Book This Trek
Duration: 4 Days / 3 Nights
Altitude: 4,566m (Socialist Peak)
Location: Arusha National Park

Trek Overview

Mount Meru is one of Tanzania’s most underrated adventures. This trek offers a unique experience through wildlife-filled forests and scenic ridges. You may see giraffes, buffaloes, and monkeys along the way.

The summit provides one of the best views of Mount Kilimanjaro, making it perfect for both adventure seekers and acclimatization before Kilimanjaro.

Day 1 — Momella Gate (1,500m) to Miriakamba Hut (2,500m)

Distance: 10 km | Hiking Time: 4–6 hours

Meals: Lunch & Dinner

Your adventure begins at Momella Gate inside Arusha National Park after registration and briefing. Unlike Kilimanjaro, this trek starts with an armed ranger escort due to the presence of wildlife. As you walk through open grasslands and dense forest, expect to see giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, warthogs, and a variety of bird species.

The trail gradually ascends through fig trees and waterfalls, offering a peaceful introduction to the mountain. The landscape transitions from savannah to montane forest, with fresh air and rich biodiversity.

Arrive at Miriakamba Hut in the late afternoon, where you’ll enjoy dinner and relax while taking in views of the surrounding forest. This is your first night on the mountain.

Day 2 — Miriakamba Hut (2,500m) to Saddle Hut (3,570m)

Distance: 8 km | Hiking Time: 3–5 hours

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

After breakfast, continue your ascent through steep forest trails before entering the moorland zone. The scenery begins to change dramatically, with giant heather, open landscapes, and panoramic views.

As you climb higher, enjoy spectacular views of the Meru Crater and Ash Cone. The air becomes cooler, and the vegetation becomes more sparse as you approach Saddle Hut.

After lunch and some rest, you will take an optional acclimatization hike to Little Meru (3,820m). This short climb rewards you with breathtaking sunset views and helps your body adjust to altitude.

Return to Saddle Hut for dinner and an early night, preparing for your summit attempt.

Saddle Hut

Day 3 — Saddle Hut to Socialist Peak (4,566m) & Return to Miriakamba Hut

Distance: 19 km | Hiking Time: 10–12 hours

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Your summit attempt begins around midnight. Equipped with headlamps, you will follow a narrow ridge along the crater rim. The climb is steady and physically demanding but incredibly rewarding.

As you ascend, enjoy dramatic views of the Meru Crater below and the distant lights of Arusha. At sunrise, you’ll witness one of Africa’s most spectacular views — Mount Kilimanjaro rising above the clouds.

Reach Socialist Peak (4,566m), the summit of Mount Meru. Celebrate your achievement, take photos, and soak in the panoramic views.

Afterward, descend back to Saddle Hut for a short rest before continuing down to Miriakamba Hut for your final night on the mountain.
