Trek Overview

The Rongai Route is the only northern approach to Kilimanjaro, offering a quieter, less crowded trekking experience. This eight-day trek takes you through lush forests, moorlands, and alpine deserts, gradually ascending to Uhuru Peak. The route provides stunning views of Kenya’s plains and the northern slopes of the mountain, giving trekkers a unique perspective of Africa’s highest peak.

With experienced guides and porters, you will be supported every step of the way. The slower pace and longer itinerary allow for proper acclimatization, increasing the chances of a successful summit. Scenic landscapes, flora, and fauna enrich this unforgettable adventure.

Day 1 — Arrival in Moshi & Pre-Trek Briefing

Meals: Dinner | Accommodation: Hotel in Moshi

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport or Moshi town. Meet your guides and porters, check your equipment, and attend a detailed briefing covering the itinerary, safety, and trekking tips. Overnight in Moshi allows you to rest, hydrate, and prepare for the adventure ahead.

Day 2 — Rongai Gate to Simba Camp

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner | Accommodation: Simba Camp

Start trekking from Rongai Gate into the dense rainforest. The forest is rich with wildlife, tall trees, and cascading streams. Trek gradually to Simba Camp (2,950m), allowing your body to acclimatize while enjoying the serene environment and scenic views.

Day 3 — Simba Camp to Second Cave Camp

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner | Accommodation: Second Cave Camp

Trek through the moorland zone with sparse vegetation and unique giant lobelias. Pass by volcanic rock formations and enjoy distant views of the Kenyan plains. Reach Second Cave Camp (3,750m) in the afternoon for rest, acclimatization, and optional short hikes to explore the surroundings.

Day 4 — Second Cave Camp to Kikelewa Camp

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner | Accommodation: Kikelewa Camp

Ascend gently across the moorlands and rolling hills, enjoying expansive panoramic views. Reach Kikelewa Camp (4,600m), where the altitude begins to challenge your stamina. Rest, hydrate, and take short acclimatization walks to prepare for higher elevations.

Day 5 — Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Camp

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner | Accommodation: Mawenzi Tarn Camp

Trek through alpine desert landscapes towards Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,800m), with views of the jagged Mawenzi peak. The terrain is rugged and dramatic, providing excellent photo opportunities and preparing the body for the summit climb.

Day 6 — Mawenzi Tarn to Barafu Camp

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner | Accommodation: Barafu Camp

Trek to Barafu Camp (4,600m), the base for the final summit push. Enjoy spectacular views of glaciers and Kilimanjaro’s northern slopes. Early dinner and rest are essential for the pre-dawn summit climb.

Day 7 — Summit Uhuru Peak & Descent to Mweka Camp

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner | Accommodation: Mweka Camp

Begin the pre-dawn summit climb to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) for an unforgettable sunrise. Celebrate your achievement and descend via Barafu to Mweka Camp (3,100m), reflecting on the challenging but rewarding journey.

Day 8 — Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate & Departure

Meals: Breakfast & Lunch | Accommodation: Hotel in Moshi

Complete the descent to Mweka Gate where certificates are awarded. Transfer back to Moshi for showers, meals, and relaxation. Conclude your eight-day Rongai Route adventure and prepare for onward travel.
